C++ Run Time Error for Half Life 2?

Yes, I know this has been resolved but I got it from a different place than steam. I know people say to go to command prompt, since I have Windows 7, and put in. "C:\Program Files\Half Life 2\root\hl2.exe" -+mat_forcehardwaresync 0. I have it in Program Files (x86) so it would be "C:\Program Files (x86)\Half Life 2\root\hl2.exe" -+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 for me. I put that in and nothing happens. I've put it in and it just moves me to the next command line and asks what I want to put in next. I go and open it, press start new game and it freezes after G Man says "Not that i'm implying you're sleeping on the job". Can anybody help me? I'm running Windows 7, as said before.
